Steel beams that form part of the framework for a new Ministry of Foreign Affairs building have collapsed. Located on Molesworth Street in central Wellington, the building is scheduled to open next year, providing office space for MFAT and other organizations. According to a spokesperson for the developer, Precinct Properties, severe weather is suspected to have caused the damage. In the past 24 hours, gale-force winds have also led to dozens of flight cancellations and roof damage across the capital.
Fire and Emergency reported that firefighters were dispatched to three locations where building or roofing materials were lifting due to strong winds, as well as two sites with low-hanging power or telephone lines. A taxi driver noted that wind gusts in Evans Bay, near the airport, had blown cyclists off their bikes. About 350 Wellington-area homes lost power on Friday morning, though it was later restored.
Travelers planning to head out for the Labour Weekend were urged to start early as more severe weather is anticipated. The MetService warned that the upper South Island and lower North Island would likely be hardest hit on Saturday, with adverse weather expected across much of the country.
