Saudi Arabia plans to construct the tallest tower in the world

British firm Foster + Partners is the main architectural firm behind a proposal for a 2-kilometer-high tower in Riyadh. The company won the design competition for the project in 2022 and, due to reports, it was awarded the contract by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).

The tower is planned to be situated north of the capital city of Saudi Arabia, close to its international airport. After its completion, it will surpass Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building in Dubai standing at 828m. The aim for the new tower is to exceed more than twice the height of the Burj Khalifa.

Moreover, it should be mentioned that in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia the tallest building is the Abraj Al Bait Royal Clock Tower in Mecca, with height equal to 600m, while they are at the middle of construction of a 1,000-meter-high tower called Jeddah Tower. The project of Jeddah Tower began in 2011, but it was suspended until last year.

In addition to the tower project, Foster + Partners is involved in expanding Riyadh’s airport, now known as the King Salman International Airport, along with working on two other airports in Saudi Arabia and various other projects. Saudi Arabia is currently working on a series of extensive architectural projects known as “giga projects”. One of these projects is The Line, a 170-kilometer-long city planned to reach a height of 500m, making it one of the tallest buildings in the country.
