GeoStabilization International, in partnership with the City of Kelowna, undertook a significant endeavor to address the instability plaguing the historic Knox Mountain landslide area. Nestled in the heart of Kelowna, British Columbia, Knox Mountain is not only a cherished recreational destination but also a critical aspect of the region's ecological and infrastructural integrity. However, when a segment of the hillside beneath Royal View Drive began exhibiting signs of movement in 2018, it sparked concerns over public safety and infrastructure vulnerability.
Upon careful examination of the site, GeoStabilization International identified several factors contributing to the instability, including the composition of underlying soils, steep slope gradients, and elevated groundwater levels. To counteract these challenges, an innovative and meticulously engineered solution was devised, focusing on targeted remediation measures tailored to specific areas susceptible to slope movement.
Central to the stabilization strategy was the utilization of grout-injected hollow bar soil nails and high-strength steel mesh. This advanced technique involved the installation of hollow bar soil nails deep into the slope, effectively anchoring the unstable ground and preventing further movement. The choice of hollow bar soil nails proved crucial, as their superior installation rates, pullout capacity, and bond strength made them ideal for the dynamic conditions of the active landslide area.
To complement the soil nails, high-strength steel mesh was strategically positioned over the slope, providing additional reinforcement and stability. This mesh not only acted as a protective barrier but also facilitated the interconnection of the soil nails, creating a cohesive system capable of withstanding the forces exerted by the surrounding terrain.

Moreover, the project incorporated sophisticated engineering analyses to ensure long-term efficacy and resilience. Factor of safety calculations were meticulously performed to account for potential variations in groundwater levels and to meet industry standards for stability in varying conditions. Additionally, detailed site assessments and data analyses guided the placement and orientation of soil nails and steel mesh, optimizing their effectiveness and longevity.
Throughout the project, safety remained paramount, with stringent protocols in place to safeguard workers, assets, and the environment. From meticulous site preparation to comprehensive erosion control measures, every aspect of the operation was meticulously planned and executed to minimize risks and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
The culmination of these efforts resulted in the successful restoration of the Knox Mountain hillside, providing a lasting solution to the longstanding instability issues. By combining innovative techniques with meticulous planning and execution, GeoStabilization International and the City of Kelowna have not only preserved a cherished natural landmark but also safeguarded the well-being of the surrounding community for generations to come.
