Piraeus, Greece: Masonry building collapse caused one fatality and three injuries

On Tuesday 16^th of April, a building collapsed in the Pasalimani area of Piraeus. Due to the collapse one man lost his life while three others were injured. It is mentioned that the structure was under reconstruction, while according to the statement of the fire department, the building was quite old and abandoned. Seven individuals, including five workers, the contractor, and the truck driver, have been apprehended by law enforcement.

Furthermore, according to the statement of the police department, the victim was a 31-year-old police officer, but he was working at the renovation. He was on-site during the collapse and tried to seek refuge in a truck, but unfortunately, he was trapped beneath the debris when it fell onto the vehicle. Firefighters and rescuers from the Fire Service EMAK responded promptly, managing to find the man, but unfortunately, he was already unconscious. The three injured were construction workers and they were admitted to the hospital.

As witnesses have stated, at the time of the incident, nine workers were at the site, while the construction had begun just two days before. As of present, the exact cause of the collapse remains unclear. However, it is more likely that structural issues got worse by the ongoing construction. The investigation to determine the causes of the collapse is still ongoing.
