On Thursday, March 13, 2025, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake rattled Naples, Italy. According to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the quake struck at approximately 1:25 a.m. local time, with its epicenter in Campi Flegrei (Phlegraean Fields) at a depth of 2.5 km.
Authorities reported that the earthquake resulted in one injury after a false ceiling collapsed, while some buildings sustained structural damage. Following the 4.4-magnitude tremor, multiple aftershocks triggered panic among residents.
To ensure public safety, authorities set up designated gathering areas and ordered schools to remain closed for the day. The fire department announced plans to inspect buildings in Bacoli, Bagnoli, and Pozzuoli to assess damage and potential risks.
Footage from the affected areas shows vehicles buried under rubble and cracked buildings following the main quake. In a statement, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni assured the public that authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
Campi Flegrei, the epicenter of the earthquake, is part of Europe’s largest active caldera, formed by a volcanic eruption approximately 40,000 years ago. Despite the seismic activity, scientists maintain that a major eruption is unlikely in the near future.
