On Friday, October 11, around 6 p.m. a building, that was under construction, collapsed on Jalan Bukit Senjuang in Bandar Hilir resulting to the death of one worker. Furthermore, two others were severely injured after they were trapped beneath the debris. The injured were promptly transferred to Melaka Hospital to receive medical care.
According to Raja Saiful, who is the deputy director of the Melaka Fire and Rescue Department, the department received a call about the collapse at 6:18 p.m. on Friday, and immediately a team of 81 personnel arrived at the site and started the rescue operations. He added that the rescue efforts were challenging due to the amount of hazardously sticking out steel at the site of the collapsed building. Therefore, 40 personnel from Malaysia's Special Tactical and Rescue Team were added to the team to assist with the rescue operations.
Officials stated that the three-storey building that was under construction was illegal as the owner of the structure failed to obtain legal permits and documentation of the approval of the project. According to the Melaka Historic City Council the construction violated local regulations, while the fine for such violations is about RM50,000.
