Majorca: Two storey restaurant collapsed leading to 4 fatalities

A two-storey restaurant collapsed in Majorca, Spanish Island around 20:30 local time (19:30 BST) on Thursday 23rd of May. The collapsed building was the Medusa Beach Club, a popular beachside restaurant in Palma de Mallorca, the regional capital, situated among dozens of bars, restaurants, and hotels. As aftermath of the collapse four people lost their lives while 16 were injured. Local police have already identified the victims.

As the terrace gave way, eyewitnesses heard a sound like an explosion, they felt the vibration of the ceiling falling and then customers and employees fell into the basement beneath them. Authorities attribute the collapse to "excessive weight" on the terrace, and local media indicated that investigators were examining whether the building met regulatory standards.

The actual cause of the collapse hasn’t been determined yet, but an investigation is undergoing. Furthermore, officials announced that psychology experts would be brought in to help those traumatized by the incident, while the Balearic capital has declared three days of mourning.
