In December of 2022 the construction of Rajasthan’s longest bridge over the Chambal River near Kota started and the completion was anticipated in September of 2025. However, due to weather conditions only 25% of the bridge is completed leading to the project duration being extended until 2026. Specifically, it spans 1880 meters and is being constructed between Jharel, Khatauli, and Khandar, connecting the Kota and Sawai Madhopur districts.
According to Naresh Chaudhary, who is the executive engineer of the project, critical work is still pending. Particularly, he stated that the bridge is designed to have 46 pillars and 46 piles, however, they had managed to complete only 18 pillars and 36 piles. In addition, he stated that they successfully completed land acquisition that covers 3.95 hectares in Etawah and 2.55 hectares in Khandar.
The delays were caused by seasonal flooding and especially by water released from the Kota Barrage and nearby tributaries. Therefore, the construction site has been submerged for four months during the monsoon. Rajesh Kumar Soni, the superintending engineer of PWD Kota project, added in his statement that they can continue construction only during winter and summer months. However, during the rainy season they managed to continue girder and span work.
It should be noted that the project has a total budget of Rs 165 crore, while Rs 111 crore of it is allocated for construction. The remaining funds are designated for land acquisition and forest-related tasks. In all, the project is significant for the country as after completion is expected to significantly improve connectivity and more than 10 lakh people will benefit especially during the rainy season when the existing bridge gets flooded, as officially stated.
