An ancient tower in Bologna, Italy, known for its significant tilt, comparable to the famous tower in Pisa, has been cordoned off due to concerns about potential collapse. Authorities are constructing a 5m high barrier around the 12th Century Garisenda Tower to contain debris in case of a fall. The tower, standing at 47m, leans at a four-degree angle, and recent monitoring has detected shifts in its tilt direction, leading the city council to deem the situation "highly critical."
The Garisenda Tower, one of the two prominent towers in Bologna's skyline, is undergoing protective measures, including the construction of the barrier and the installation of metal rockfall nets. The other tower, the Asinelli Tower, leans but is generally open to tourists. Both towers were constructed between 1109 and 1119, with the Garisenda's height reduced in the 14th Century due to its initial leaning. Dante's poem, The Divine Comedy, completed in 1321, mentions the Garisenda Tower.
The site was initially closed in October when sensors detected changes in the tower's tilt, and inspections revealed material deterioration at its base. The city council has initiated a protection plan to preserve the tower. The ongoing is construction considered the first phase of ensuring safety. Besides containing debris, the barrier aims to shield nearby structures and people in the event of a collapse. The restoration project, that is expected to last several years, includes the installation of metal rockfall nets.
The city estimates the barrier's cost at €4.3m (£3.7m) and has launched a crowdfunding campaign to finance the restoration. Describing it as an "extraordinary challenge," the council calls for support from the city's residents and people worldwide who love Bologna and consider the tower a significant symbol. Construction of the barrier is set to be completed early next year, but the tower and the surrounding plaza will remain closed during the restoration work.
