Athens- Corinth highway, Greece: A bridge was demolished after truck’s overturn

On Friday, the 7th at around 10 p.m. local time, a fuel truck overturned and burst into flames on the Athens–Corinth highway, causing severe structural damage to the bridge it was crossing. Although the vehicle was completely damaged, the driver fortunately escaped and was taken to a local hospital with relatively minor injuries.

According to the driver’s explanation, the front tire hit an object on the road, causing a blowout and loss of control that led to the overturn. However, the site didn't have any cameras to verify the cause. It should be mentioned that the truck was transporting fuel to a private company in Zakynthos, Greece, when the incident occurred. Currently, the police are investigating the causes of the accident.

Firefighters, with 9 vehicles, along with police and other authorities, responded promptly. Furthermore, a construction company was deployed to aid with crews and machinery. The deputy Minister of Infrastructure stated that extensive heat from the fire caused severe and irreparable structural damage to the bridge, leading to the decision to demolish it. Repairs will last for about a week, necessitating the closure of one lane of the highway.
