On Tuesday December 17, a strong 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit the coast of Vanuatu resulting in the death of at least 14 people, while hundreds were injured and many other are still trapped beneath debris. The epicenter of the earthquake was 30km west of Port Vila, Vanuatu’s largest city, while the depth was at 57km.
According to the authorities the quake caused extensive damage across the South Pacific Island and rescue teams are working all night to reach survivors trapped beneath the rubbles. Moreover, telecommunications and infrastructure damages affected communication, while power and water supplies remained cut off. The earthquake damaged also roads and thus, access to the airport and seaport is restricted.
In addition, after the earthquake a tsunami warning was raised as major aftershocks hit the area. However, no tsunami was created but authorities advised residents to stay away from coastlines.
As of present, Charlot Salwai, the Prime Minister, declared a state of emergency, imposing a curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. in the hardest-hit areas, and urged efforts to restore essential services. It should be noted that international support promptly mobilized and dispatched teams to help. Specifically, Australia dispatched medical and rescue teams, while a New Zealand military surveillance flight was set to assess damage and facilitate aid delivery once the airport reopened.
