The prediction of the response of structures when they are subjected to specified arbitrary external loads is called Structural Analysis. During the preliminary structural design stage, a structural engineer estimates the expected external loads and forces during the service life of a structure. Based on these estimations, the engineer selects the structural members, materials, and dimensions that are required to safely support the loads.
Once the preliminary design is complete, the engineer performs structural analyses to determine the deformations, internal forces, stresses, reactions, and other important parameters that are critical to the design of the structure. The results of the structural analysis are used to refine the design, make necessary adjustments, and optimize the structural performance of the building or structure. In this way, structural analysis is a key part of the engineering design process, ensuring that the structure will be safe.
